Pterostichus lama
Pterostichus lama is a species of ground beetle (Family Carabidae), one of the largest beetle families with common and abundant members. As is often the case with insects, species are distinguished by small morphological features and so taxonomic expertise will be required to confidently identify to species.
At 18-30 mm long, Pterostichus lama is one of the larger ground beetle species, which can measure 2-35 mm but are mostly in the 5-15 mm range. As their name suggests, ground beetles tend to be found on the ground under the cover of objects like rocks and logs. Carabid beetles can be beneficial: both the larvae and adults of most species are predators, and many feed on pests such as cutworms. Click here to learn more about Carabid beetles.
