Hymenena setchellii
Specimen collection number SCL 15330 in the UBC Herbarium Algae Databse. Search the collection number in the database for more information on this specimen, or search the species for further occurrences. Images courtesy of Sandra Lindstrom.
Reproductive structures are required for a correct identification of this red alga; Hymenena species can be difficult to differentiate from each other as well as from Cryptopleura species (see C. ruprechtiana and C. lobulifera). H. setchellii has been reported from British Columbia to California. The above specimens were found growing on bedrock in the lower intertidal of a north-facing, semi-exposed beach on Calvert Island. See AlgaeBase for more photos of this species.
